In early March, Vistra Corp. announced a $3.43 billion acquisition of Energy Harbor’s ~4,000 megawatt (MW) nuclear fleet. Combined with Vistra’s current ~3,800 MW portfolio, the resulting footprint will be ~7,800 MW and serve upwards of 5 million retail customers. The company’s ‘Vistra Vision’ will become one of the largest generators of zero-carbon power in the U.S. Based on 2022 electricity production data, the deal will make Vistra the sixth largest generator of nuclear power – just behind NextEra Energy. Since the mid-1970s, Vistra’s new portfolio of four nuclear power plants (6 reactors), has produced more than 1.6 billion MWh of energy . . . nearly 40% of annual output from all U.S. resources and more than 2X the power generated by all U.S. nuclear power plants in a typical year.
