USD 10 Billion in subsidies were paid by Brazilians in 2025.

Major news channels  reported this figure last week regarding their electric power bills.

How much does this number represent in each consumer's bill?

  • Annual national consumption is 700 million MWh.

  • The subsidies paid amount to R$ 50 billion.

  • The subsidies related to consumption then cost R$ 70/MWh.

  • The cost of a typical business energy bill is R$ 550/MWh.

  • That is, the subsidies represent 13% of the bill.

And the question remains: is this 13% significant?

I always tend to compare our energy costs with our "competitors" - BRICS countries.

The harsh reality, for years, is that we are second to last. We are far behind – in cost per kWh – Russia, India, and China. We are only more competitive than South Africa.

Subsidies favor certain solutions BUT at the cost of a lack of national competitiveness.

We should evaluate the interest and convenience of these subsidies from a broader perspective, benefiting Brazil as a whole!
