Systemic Collapse in Customer Service (Brazil/Power)

Systemic Collapse in Customer Service (Brazil/Power)

The Brazilian electricity sector is no exception to the prevailing style in our country: disregard for the customer.

1) Keeping the power grids clean and unobstructed

Neither the concessionaires, nor the municipalities, nor the regulatory bodies (ANEEL) have any real commitment. The result is well-known during storms – supply interruptions FAR exceeding established "official" limits.

2) Power theft

Electricity theft remains consistently above 10% of all energy generated in Brazil.

We don't know, we don't want to, we have no interest in, and we lack the capacity to solve or at least minimize this "problem," the cost of which is passed on to all consumers without ceremony.

3) Unrelated Projects

The electricity sector is incredibly skilled at creating monstrosities, paying for them even though they deliver no value to society. For example, Angra 3 (nuclear power plant project), which has consumed and continues to consume billions of USD for decades but delivers no energy whatsoever.

4) CDE (Energy Development Account)

The "energy development" account allocates  a list of "investments" in the monthly power bills, encompassing a range of subsidies paid for by everyone, including those who do not benefit the consumers.

5) Demand Management Programs

Brazil is very special. It is one of the countries that has NOT implemented widespread demand response programs, which leading countries introduced decades ago with great success, benefiting the entire community.

6) Decoupling between real and official peak hours

The actual peak hours of the system do not coincide with the official peak hours. This generates additional costs, but... who cares?

Meanwhile, our leaders show what the public likes to watch. But that doesn't change Brazil's position as one of the biggest losers in $/kWh when compared to the BRICS countries.
