SK Eco-plant Spearheads Monumental $15 Billion Green Hydrogen Venture in Canada: Setting the Stage for Renewable Energy Dominance

In a significant stride for the global hydrogen energy sector, SK Inc.'s renewable energy unit, SK ecoplant Co., has successfully secured a considerable tract of land to forge ahead with a $15 billion green hydrogen project in Canada. Situated in the resource-rich province of Newfoundland and Labrador, this venture is anticipated to catapult Canada to the fore as a dominant player in the green hydrogen production and export market.

The project, backed by a $50 million investment from SK for a 20% stake, is set to occupy 1,078 square kilometers of Crown Land, exploiting wind energy to create an environment-friendly fuel alternative. As detailed in a recent statement, the final phase of this expansive initiative envisages the conversion of green hydrogen into a staggering 1.08 million tons of green ammonia annually.

In a collaborative endeavor, SK has joined forces with the Canadian entity, World Energy GH2 Inc., the principal developer of the project. The ambitious blueprint for the venture comprises the establishment of an onshore wind-power plant coupled with an advanced electrolysis system, paving the path to a facility proficient in green ammonia production. Marking milestones, the project aims to inaugurate green hydrogen production by 2025, with green ammonia following suit a year later.

Taking a deep dive into the intricacies of hydrogen production, it's noteworthy that hydrogen is extracted through electrolysis. This procedure utilizes an electric current to segregate hydrogen atoms from oxygen in water, a process that stands as the backbone of green hydrogen production, contingent upon the utilization of renewable energy sources for electricity.

Undoubtedly, this is a giant leap in engineering innovation, poised to expand to a fully operational phase 3, equipped with a 4-gigawatt wind power plant with the capacity to generate 180,000 tons of green hydrogen per annum.
