Justice Cármen Lúcia of the Brazilian Supreme Federal Court (STF) stated this Tuesday (Sept. 15) that she felt ashamed of the Court's conduct and declared that the tribunal had "caused civic unease in the country."
Is this admission significant?
In my view, yes! It is the first time I have seen a high-ranking official acknowledge reality exactly as it is.
In a healthy environment, this attitude would be the first step toward a "game-changing" shift—one that would prompt a deep assessment of the status quo in order to seek more attractive and advantageous alternatives.
It would be wonderful if the electric power sector looked to Cármen Lúcia’s stance as a model for pursuing the much-needed competitiveness of our energy. It is worth noting that we rank among the lowest performers (within the BRICS - Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) in terms of cost per kWh.
Do we possess the honesty, integrity of principles, and will to make this happen, or will the preference be to leave everything exactly as it is?
