ScottMadden and Clean Power Research® Announce Strategic Partnership to Transform Utility Interconnection Processes

ScottMadden, Inc., a leading management consulting firm, and Clean Power Research®, a pioneer in utility automation software, have joined forces to deliver a comprehensive transformation of interconnection processes for utilities. This powerful partnership has already demonstrated success by dramatically improving project timelines for a large investor-owned utility in the Northeast United States.

Faced with aggressive electric vehicle (EV) adoption targets and a $700 million statewide make-ready EV infrastructure program, the utility experienced an overwhelming surge in interconnection requests, resulting in project backlogs and average interconnection timelines nearing 600 days. In response, the utility engaged ScottMadden and Clean Power Research to overhaul its EV interconnection workflows.

A Dual-Faceted Approach to Process and Technology

ScottMadden’s business process improvement expertise, paired with Clean Power Research’s industry-leading workflow automation platform, PowerClerk®, formed the footing of the transformation. The engagement began with a detailed process mapping and benchmarking effort by ScottMadden to identify bottlenecks and misalignments within the existing interconnection workflows.

“Many utilities attempt to solve process inefficiencies with new technology alone, which can reinforce existing issues” said Kevin Hernandez, ScottMadden Partner. “Our partnership with Clean Power Research and its PowerClerk platform ensures that the proper technology is deployed alongside business process redesign, making improvements that are sustainable, scalable, and aligned with client operations.”

Clean Power Research then guided the utility through the implementation of PowerClerk, enabling standardized and automated workflows that streamlined approvals, reduced redundancies, and enhanced governance.

Remarkable Results: 60% Reduction in Queue Time

The results speak for themselves. Within the first 11 months of launching the revamped interconnection process, the utility reduced average queue times by over 60%, from more than 600 days to fewer than 250. With further refinements planned, the utility is on track to reach a target interconnection timeline of just 180 days.

About the Partnership

The collaboration between ScottMadden and Clean Power Research provides a scalable model for utilities nationwide seeking to meet the demands of growing EV adoption and Distributed Energy Resources (DERs). The partnership integrates best-in- class technology with tailored business process design, delivering:

  • Streamlined and automated interconnection processes

  • Alignment with utility regulatory and operational objectives
