The power of comparison
A universally accepted way among companies, institutions and even countries to assess their status is by comparison.
Metrics could be, for example, per capita income, $/kWh of electricity, but of course the list goes on and on.
But... what's really important?
I believe that the answer lies in the collective consciousness around metrics. Thus, a country like Brazil, which has a per capita income that is a fraction of that of developed countries, cannot be satisfied. Nor think that "we are the best".
If we are laggards we would have to "wake up" our people and, our leaders, to "turn around this situation". Find out what needs to be done to reach and maintain another level!
In the electricity sector, it would be the same assessment. We should be among the most competitive in the world since our matrix is - essentially - independent of fuels. It's super renewable. But the harsh reality shows that we are not - among the most competitive.
So what? Who cares?
