100 years of carbon-free power and counting!
Ontario Power Generation’s (OPG) Niagara hydro operations are set to undergo an extensive multi-year refurbishment of the company’s five hydroelectric plants in Niagara including the 1.9-gigawatt (GW) Sir Adam Beck I and II hydroelectric generating stations. Sir Adam Beck I has been operating for more than 100 years. The first phase of the C$1-billion project will refurbish up to 25 units at Adam Beck I and II. The project will start in 2025, and last 15 years. GE Vernova is OPG’s project partner. In 2023, OPG’s Niagara hydroelectric stations recorded the highest electricity production in more than 40 years. The 13.2 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity represented an increase of 0.5 TWh from the previous year and the region’s highest output since 1982. OPG’s stations in Niagara meet about 9% of Ontario’s energy needs.
