The vague notices, sent late last week, signal potential layoffs or reorganizations in key offices, including Clean Energy Demonstrations, Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, State and Community Energy Plans, and Fossil Energy.
The DOE is already short-staffed after thousands were fired earlier this year under a DOGE initiative. The agency is now hiring outside lawyers to manage routine work and defend against lawsuits tied to canceled awards.
