Due to data center demand, Lake Tahoe got ditched by its longtime power supplier. (CalMatters)
California IOP Liberty Utilities buys about 75% of its power from Nevada-based NV Energy, which recently decided not to renew the contract after May 2027. Their reasoning? Data centers have asked NV Energy to triple its peak capacity.
What’s next: Liberty serves 49K Lake Tahoe customers, but isn't connected to California's grid—its lines run through Nevada. Replacement power will likely come from out-of-state sources via NV’s under-construction Greenlink Nevada transmission project.
