NEWS: LG and GM pivot Ultium Cells JV to LFP battery production for US storage market at Tennessee plant

Another swing from EVs to energy storage: an LG Energy Solution + General Motors plant will produce LFP batteries. (PV Magazine Energy Storage)

  • The context: As EV sales fall in the US and Canada, several manufacturing facilities have pivoted from EV battery cells to LFP cells over the past few months. These include Ford plants in KY and MI.

  • Ultium Cells, a joint venture between LG and GM, previously made nickel-based cells for EVs at its Spring Hill, TN plant. Recently, the facility received a $70M makeover to churn out LFPs for energy storage systems.

  • When production kicks off in Q2 this year, LG Energy Solution Vertech will use the cells for North American grid-scale storage, renewable energy-linked projects, and data centers.
