Duke Energy wants to merge its two utilities in the Carolinas by January 2027, a move it says could save $3.2B through 2038. (Utility Dive)
Duke Energy Carolinas owns 20,800 MW and has 2.9M customers in North Carolina and South Carolina. Duke Energy Progress owns 13,800 MW and has 1.8M customers in the region. DEC and DEP retail rates would blend in time following merger completion.
Why combine? It’s all about “maximizing efficiencies in planning and operation across the entire Carolinas footprint,” Duke said. Some 97% of the estimated cost savings would come from a merged entity’s more efficient planning, execution, and operations.
