So much has happened in the last 24 hours. The presidential debate was a disaster for President Biden. Given the political divide that exists with respect to climate change, Republican control of the White House isn’t likely to be favorable to the climate movement.
The Supreme Court has also released two significant rulings that could materially impact the effort to achieve net-zero. Just minutes ago, the Court overturned the 1984 Chevron decision. We’ll cover that next week, but it generally won’t be helpful for government agencies to enact policy.
The other decision blocks the EPA’s “good neighbor” rule. In this case the Court only paused the rule to allow the challenge to run its course in the lower courts. The rule in question had imposed emission limits on power plants and industrial sources that could cause health issues across state lines.
However, today we’ll review findings from a Pew Research survey released yesterday. The survey gauges American’s attitude toward energy choices. Overall, the findings should raise a red flag to our current climate strategy. They also illustrate the huge political chasm in attitudes that currently exists.
