Michigan’s Palisade Nuclear Plant seeks new life!

In mid-September, Holtec International announced the signing of a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with Michigan’s Wolverine Power Cooperative. The signing supports the repowering of the 800-MW Palisades Nuclear Generating Station. The deal depends on regulatory approval to reopen the dormant plant. Palisade is in Covert Township on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan. Entergy closed the Palisades plant in May 2022 and its sale to Holtec International was completed in June 2022. Before Palisade was closed, the plant accounted for about 6% of Michigan’s electricity production. Palisade is not the only major power producing plant in Michigan to shutter in recent years. Since 2020, six sizeable coal plants have been retired, and two large coal plants, J.H. Campbell (1,560-MW) and Monroe (1,640-MW) are scheduled for closure in 2025 and 2028 respectively. As recently as 2021, Palisade, combined with the recently retired coal plants and those set to retire, accounted for about 32% of total electricity production in the state. The gap is expected to be filled by a combination of natural gas, wind, solar and battery storage resources.
