Hurricane Debby makes landfall – catastrophic flooding forecast

Hurricane Debby made landfall at 7:00 AM EDT this morning near Steinhatchee, Florida, in the ‘Big Bend’ area of the U.S. gulf coast, with sustained winds of 80 miles per hour (mph). As of noon today (August 5), there were about 300,000 customers without power across parts of northcentral Florida, and southern Georgia. According to NOAA's National Hurricane Center, as much as 20 to even 30 inches of rain are possible in some locations along the storm's path. The storm track is similar to last year’s Hurricane Idalia. Idalia made landfall as a Category 3 storm in late August (2023) with sustained winds of 125/mph – but quickly weakened. Infrastructure damages from Idalia totaled roughly $3.5bn. Everyone in the Debby's path stay safe!
