Global First With Green Hydrogen-Powered Aluminum Production
Norwegian aluminium and renewable energy company Norsk Hydro ASA (OSE:NHY) said today it has produced the world’s first batch of recycled aluminium using green hydrogen as fuel.
The test, where hydrogen replaced natural gas, took place at a casthouse in Hydro’s extrusion plant in Navarra, Spain. It was conducted by Hydro’s green hydrogen company Hydro Havrand and industrial engineering group Fives.
While previously there have been lab-scale tests, this is the world’s first known successful industrial-scale test of using hydrogen as an energy source in aluminium production, according to the announcement.
As hydrogen behaves differently than natural gas, the trial is part of the path toward the development of commercial fuel switch solutions. Hydro and Fives expect to complete a final report from the test in the autumn.
