Getting a heat pump? Put a surge protector on it.

Check out my latest blog. It’s all about power surges, those momentary spikes of high voltage electricity that are sometimes caused by lightning, and cause billions of dollars of damages in the US every year. That’s why computer manufacturers recommend we plug their products into surge-protector power strips.

Contemporary heat pumps and air conditioners are essentially computers wired up to compressors and fans. They can also be damaged by power surges. Indeed, when they are so damaged, they can cost far more to repair than a computer. Yet heating and cooling equipment installers rarely recommend including surge protectors.
