An electric vehicle (EV) is simply a portable power bank. For many utilities, electrification is the main focus, mainly the level of grid readiness. For some utilities, developing vehicle 2 everything (home, grid, building, microgrids, etc.) programs and rates are also on their radar. As a planner and prior energy control center operator, I simply think of an EV is a power bank that offers flexibility, mobility, peace of mind, and also the need to charge for later usage. I have been involved with EVs since 2007 and I believe that by 2025, we will have robust programs that truly utilize EVs as a utility portable power bank, that is beneficial for grid and the EV owner.
