Electricity: The Big Changes
Perhaps the most important is, and will be, the shift from centralised to distributed systems.
Centralised systems have been around for over a century. Distributed systems have advanced significantly, especially due to solar and wind generation.
The central challenge, in my opinion, will be to reflect this change in the way energy will be priced in the future—both for "wire fees" and "commodity".
The current system is unable to reflect the real costs incurred in this increasingly prevalent scenario.
At the core is the need for customers to be able to manage their demand and consumption profile practically in real time, using all available tools to address the costs that will be involved, including, for example:
Storage,
Taking advantage of real-time pricing,
Demand control,
Peak-to-off-peak transfer,
Cost arbitrage between sources
The list goes on!
