This is a huge milestone for China's energy sector.
The CAP1400 is an advanced pressurized water reactor. It's an enlarged version of the CAP1000, which was developed with help from the U.S. company Westinghouse.
Research for this reactor began back in 2008. By 2009, the State Nuclear Plant Demonstration Company was established. This joint venture was set up to build and operate the CAP1400 reactors.
Construction of the first unit began in June 2019, and the second unit followed in April 2020. The National Nuclear Safety Administration issued an operating license for the first reactor in July 2024.
The reactor will now undergo gradual power ascension testing. This is to ensure it operates safely before it officially enters commercial operation.
The CAP1400's success marks a significant step forward for China and the nuclear industry.
