Researchers continue to work on battery technology trying new materials to meet the growing demand for storage in transportation, devices and grid operations. Lithium-ion is today's standard with anodes made from graphite. Toshiba in partnership with Sojitz, a Japanese aerospace company, and CBMM, a Brazilian mining company, have entered into a partnership to produce SCiB, a super charge ion battery that uses niobium-titanium oxide anodes and produces double the energy density of Li-ion using graphite anodes. They unveiled an electric bus this month powered by SCiBs and plan to manufacture this new battery for EVs and the electrical grid market.
