Alaska Airlines recently signed its largest sustainable aviation fuel commitment to date, with biofuel firm Gevo, following the Lufthansa and shell SAF pact. With effect from 2026, Gevo will provide 37 million gallons of SAF annually for five years.
As a substantial source of GHG emissions, accounting for an estimated 2 percent of worldwide GHG emissions, air travel has come under increasing scrutiny in recent years. Participants in the market believe that SAF, which produces 80% fewer lifecycle carbon emissions than conventional jet fuel, is one of the most important instruments available to the industry for addressing its impact on emissions. Instead of using fossil fuels, SAF is typically made from sustainable resources such as waste oils, agricultural wastes, or even carbon recovered from the air.
