A recent study on plastic pollution notes that the average adult ingests 50,000 microplastic particles annually. Children ingest 40,000. The health threat from this exposure in humans is unknown but one of growing concern in light of a study of seabirds that has identified microplastic ingestion with a newly named and potentially fatal disease: Plasticosis.Â
