As solar PV penetration increases worldwide, maintaining power quality and grid stability—particularly in weak and developing grids—has become a major technical challenge.
Dr. Eng. Husam Ali Hadi has introduced an applied engineering solution based on AI-supported Active Power Filters (APFs) designed to mitigate harmonics, improve voltage and current waveforms, and enhance dynamic grid performance in renewable-energy-dominated systems.
Published results in reputable international journals, including Heliyon (Cell Press), confirm the effectiveness of this approach. The proposed system achieves a substantial reduction in Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), lowering inverter output voltage THD from 32% to 2.8%, and current THD from 58% to below 10%. These improvements directly translate into more stable, reliable, and efficient PV systems, even under weak grid conditions.
Technical Insights for Practitioners:
AI-Based Control: Use of the Imperialist Competitive Algorithm (ICA) to optimize active filter parameters and enhance Sinusoidal Pulse Width Modulation (SPWM), ensuring near-ideal sinusoidal current injection.
Dynamic Stability Enhancement: Significant suppression of overshoot and oscillations, leading to faster and more robust system response to variations in solar irradiance and temperature.
Energy Storage Integration: Comparative evaluation of battery technologies, including lithium-ion systems, to support optimal energy utilization and grid interaction.
This work demonstrates how AI-driven power electronics and control strategies can provide practical, scalable solutions to real-world grid challenges, bridging the gap between academic research and utility-scale applications.
I welcome discussion with Energy Central professionals and researchers working in power quality, smart grids, and renewable energy integration.
