NEWS: Illinois ComEd customers may be paying for electrical waste, company says; utility disputes claim

Whisker Labs (a company that measures and tracks electrical grids) says its sensors show unusually high levels of Total Harmonic Distortion (higher THD = less energy efficiency and more damage to appliances and devices) in ComEd territory. (CBS News)

  • The findings: 40% of homes in the surveyed area had distorted power, Whisker Labs said. That could mean wasted electricity and hundreds of extra dollars per year for customers.

  • ComEd pushed back, saying 1) the metrics aren’t industry-standard or substantiated and 2) Illinois has some of the lowest average electricity bills in the Midwest.
