When the emergency control rod system at a Swedish nuclear power plant developed a crack in a welded fitting, the control rod had to be taken out of service and the housing plugged, thus reducing the reactor’s capacity. Investigation showed that a weld had cracked on the water pipe connected to a two-inch (5.08 mm) nozzle that was itself welded into the emergency control rod housing a module unapproachable by people and conventional machine tools. For help in developing a repair method, the plant operators contracted with a Swedish engineering firm, who in turn called in Climax. This case study details Climax's solution.
