South Carolina Electric and Gas Company (SCE&G) has been awarded the 2013 Utility Analytics Institute Innovation Award for Customer Analytics. SCE&G was recognized for leveraging analytics to create personalized, two‐way energy efficiency communication with customers through the Home Energy Reports program.

The award was presented on September 24 at the Innovations Awards Ceremony, part of UAI’s Utility Analytics Week, held in Atlanta, GA. On hand to accept the award on behalf of SCE&G was Jennifer M. Mosser, SCE&G’s Demand Side Management Residential Program Manager. Patrick Niehoff, Account Director for Direct Options attended the event.

The Home Energy Reports program was designed and developed collaboratively by SCE&G and Direct Options, and implemented by SCE&G in 2010. “We’re proud to be a solutions provider to SCE&G and have enjoyed seeing the impact this program has had on their residential electric customer base,” according to Niehoff.

SCE&G’s Home Energy Reports Program:

SCE&G’s Home Energy Reports program establishes a two‐way communication channel with customers. The goals are to educate customers on their electricity usage, and to aid the customer in proactively managing their energy usage, leading to greater energy efficiency and bill savings. An added outcome is greater engagement with SCE&G, leading to increased customer satisfaction. This is an opt‐in program where customers are invited to participate. They provide information on appliances and energy consumption behaviors in the home, develop their own energy management strategy, and receive monthly reporting on progress against their plan. The well‐designed report also provides energy management information specifically chosen for the customer based on the information they provided.

SCE&G combines data from multiple sources to feed analytics. Usage and billing information, demographics, appliances, customer behaviors and personal savings goals provided by the customer are all utilized to create a comprehensive, 360 degree view of each participant and their household. A combination of models and business rules determine the personalized, dynamic messaging content of each month’s report. Analytics also provides a comparison of customers’ usage to similarly situated households to deliver contextual and historical references of energy usage.

As of August 2013, over 36,000 residential electric customers participate in the Home Energy Reports program. In year two of the program, it is second only to SCE&G’s ENERGY STAR® retail lighting program for cost/net MWh saved, and is a gateway to the adoption of other DSM products and services.

Follow‐up customer surveys reveal that 70% of participants have taken energy management actions, compared to 40% of the control group, and 85% would recommend the Home Energy Reports program to others.

SCE&G offers a comprehensive portfolio of EnergyWise® programs that work together to increase overall energy efficiency and reduce energy usage during peak times. Through the use of energy efficient tips and ideas, rebates and incentives, SCE&G customers reduced approximately 133,000 MWh of energy during the portfolio’s first and second years.
