Small Modular Reactors are not just “smaller nuclear plants.”

They represent a structural shift in nuclear energy: from bespoke megaprojects to factory-built, modular, scalable clean firm power. Key technical points worth watching:

⚛️ Capacity & design: SMRs typically deliver 10–300 MWe, compared with 1,000+ MWe conventional reactors. Their modular architecture allows capacity to be added incrementally.

🏭 Manufacturing model: Instead of decade-long site construction, SMRs are designed for off-site fabrication, standardized quality control, transport to site, and faster deployment.

🛡️ Passive safety: Many designs rely on gravity, natural circulation, and thermal expansion — not active pumps or diesel generators. Some can maintain safe cooling for 72+ hours without AC power or operator intervention.

💰 Economics: FOAK vs NOAK: First-of-a-kind costs remain high — roughly $6,000–$9,000/kW. But with serial production, supply-chain maturity, and favorable financing, NOAK costs may approach ~$3,000/kW.

Financing matters enormously: a 12% WACC can push LCOE to ~$130/MWh, while state-backed or low-cost capital can bring it closer to ~$65/MWh.

🌍 Deployment outlook: Over 80 SMR designs are under development across 20+ countries. Western commercialization is expected between 2025 and 2035, with fleet-scale economics likely after 2035.

🔋 Use cases go beyond electricity: SMRs may support AI data centers, industrial heat, hydrogen production, desalination, district heating, remote operations, and grid stabilization.

The challenge is real: fuel supply, licensing, materials performance, waste streams, and first-of-a-kind cost risk.

But the opportunity is clear: firm, low-carbon, dispatchable power in a format that can finally scale like an industrial product. SMRs are not just a new reactor class. They are the industrialization of nuclear energy.
