Today, U.S. Representative Jaime Herrera Beutler (WA-03) applauded the advancement of two bipartisan bills she’s leading to improve energy efficiency and strengthen grid security in Southwest Washington. The two bills, which were approved by the U.S. House Science, Space, and Technology Committee today, focus on expanding research and durability of grid scale energy storage and the modernization of our nation’s electric grid.

“I’m encouraged that the House is advancing my bipartisan legislation to improve energy efficiency and reliability for Southwest Washington residents,” Herrera Beutler said. “Ensuring we have dependable power sources if a natural disaster strikes, as well as efficient and effective storage for that power, is imperative for a better energy future. I’ll continue to advocate for solutions that benefit employers and the jobs they provide for Southwest Washington workers, as well as families and critical community services.”

Herrera Beutler introduced the Better Energy Storage Technology (BEST) Act of 2019, H.R. 2986, along with her colleague, Rep. Bill Foster (IL-11). The BEST Act reauthorizes the efforts of the Department of Energy’s grid-scale storage research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) and creates specific objectives for energy RD&D projects, and bolsters research with federal agencies and national labs.

Herrera Beutler also introduced the Grid Modernization Research and Development Act of 2019, H.R. 5428, with her colleague Rep. Conor Lamb (PA-17). The bill seeks to refine and expand research and development programs aimed at increasing the reliability and security of the grid. Specifically, the bill extends the Smart Grid Regional Demonstration initiative and focuses research, development, and demonstration on enhancing grid resilience and emergency response, developing hybrid energy systems, and developing advanced controls, operations, monitoring and visualization tools for the grid.

The next step for both bills will be a vote by the full U.S. House of Representatives.
