China, Saudi Tie up in Nuclear Energy

China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) held a Saudi Arabian uranium and thorium resources appraisal seminar and the first coordinator meeting of Sino-Saudi project cooperation in Xinjiang on July 18.

The uranium and thorium project is the start project of Sino-Saudi nuclear energy cooperation and has achieved fruits.

CNNC and Saudi Arabia's geological survey bureau entered into a MOU on uranium and thorium cooperation on March 16. Upon the agreement, CNNC was to launch radioactive resources exploration in nine areas in Saudi Arabia within two years.

The King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy (K.A.CARE) announced in 2011 that it planned to spend USD 80 billion building an installed nuclear power capacity of 17 million kilowatts by 2032. However, the Saudi government said in January 2015 that it could achieve the target by 2040.

The Saudi government said in October 2016 that the country would pick a site for construction of nuclear power plant soon and would announce a material plan within the following 12 months.
