This is an extremely important and all too frequently overlooked factor.  There is a great deal to be gained from efficiency improvements with respect to generation, transmission and end-user action, especially in cities. Please click on the key words above, especially #energy-efficiency, to get an idea of the possibilities and what has already been done.

We hear a great deal about the upward curve in energy consumption.  Though likely to increase, it is not to be assumed that projected new energy requirements, especially in the "developed world", will be as great as assumed, largely because of energy efficiency measures.

Not only is it overlooked as a factor, but oftentimes the energy efficiency is the lowest hanging of the fruit. These are measures that can be tackled today thanks to the roadmaps laid out by other organizations who have already done it. The tech is there, it's just about implementing it.
