Energy Management Systems

Getting the most energy savings from your HVAC system requires equipment that can adjust—such as variable speed drives or demand limiting—rather than simple on/off control. While these strategies can improve efficiency, they also introduce more complexity, which can make it harder to maintain consistent, long-term savings.

Energy management systems (EMS) and analytics are often presented as solutions to this challenge. This course offers a practical, in-depth look at EMS—emphasizing that they are not one-size-fits-all tools. Each system requires its own set of parameters and success criteria tailored to the building, its users, and its goals.

Who Should Attend:
This course is designed with building owners, managers, operators, maintenance teams, and facility managers in mind. However, anyone interested in improving building energy performance—especially through HVAC and energy management strategies—will find valuable insights and applicable knowledge.

You’ll leave this session able to:

  • Distinguish between building management systems (BMS) and energy management systems (EMS)

  • Describe essential EMS features, control strategies, and techniques appropriate for various user types and end goals

  • Analyze performance indicators and dashboard configurations that enhance visibility into building operations, with a focus on HVAC systems

Additional continuing education credits:
This course also qualifies for the following CEUs:

  • BPI: 4 CEUs

  • NATE: 4 CEHs

  • BOC: 4 maintenance points
