PJM’s long-stalled storage market is finally gaining traction thanks to new interconnection reforms. (Utility Dive)
After years of restrictive rules, the grid operator’s surplus interconnection reform now allows batteries to use underutilized grid capacity at existing power plants, unlocking up to 26 GW of potential new access for storage developers.
The first test of the new process—a fast-track review of 51 projects totaling 11.8 GW—is still dominated by gas, but it includes about 2.3 GW of battery projects that could be built much faster than traditional queue timelines.
With states like Maryland, New Jersey, and Virginia setting firm storage targets, analysts say PJM could add 7 GW of new battery capacity within just a few auction cycles—critical relief as capacity prices surge and demand rises.
