“WHY DC?” 01 Your LEDs Run on DC. So why are we converting AC to DC to make light?

LEDs are fundamentally DC devices. Yet most buildings distribute AC power, so conventional LED lighting typically relies on drivers to convert that electricity into the controlled DC the LEDs need. That raises a bigger question: What if we rethought the way buildings deliver power—not just the way they consume it?

As buildings integrate LED lighting, solar PV, battery storage, and other DC-native technologies, DC distribution deserves a closer look. The opportunity isn't automatic savings. It's smarter system design, fewer unnecessary conversions where practical, and a more integrated approach to building electrification. For engineers, architects, contractors, facility managers, and energy leaders: Is it time to rethink the power behind the light?

This is 01 in our 12-part series: Why DC?
