Straws and SUVS

A speaker at an energy related event in São Paulo (Brazil) cited the need to replace plastic straws with a greener alternative. Of course, to reduce emissions and pollution.

At the end of the event this speaker and I were waiting for our cars. Mine is a compact. The speaker's a big SUV,

The weight difference between our cars is about 1 000 pounds. It amounts, in round numbers, to 250,000 plastic straws. That's right: 1/4 million.

The message is simple. It makes sense deciding on our own emissions. Choosing small cars, favoring public transportation or even using apps. If each one makes this commitment we will collectively and significantly reduce emissions.

Speech and action aligned!
