Duke Energy's proposed settlement agreement with consumer and public interest groups entails pumping as much as $6 billion of capital into a variety of distributed solar and renewable energy, battery energy storage and smart grid projects, as well as cancelling construction of the Levy nuclear power project without the state government and taxpayers having to foot any more of project costs...
It's an historic, precedent-setting proposal for Duke, and for Florida. The Sunshine State's world famous cities are under threat. Miami Beach is likely to spend many billions in attempts to stem and avoid the worst effects, costs and threats of rising sea level and storm surges, which could extend to outright evacuation and abandonment of large swaths of the first man-made, Industrial Age US city built expressly for beach and coastal water tourism.
Meanwhile, the state governor and his administration continue to deny the carbon and greenhouse gas emissions we humans have been pumping into the atmosphere in ever larger quantities since the dawn of the Industrial Age in the mid-19th century play any significant role in the rapidly warming global climate.
