The U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability (OE) Is Using Sensors On Transformers to Improve Grid Reliability
"The initial focus of this project will be on the critical distribution transformers. The monitoring system will combine embedded fiber optic sensors and intelligent algorithms to sense internal parameters, gather state information, and predict safety conditions and remaining life." This, of course, is when the system works within the existing grid. In the meanwhile, a new form and type of transformer is already being developed for smart grids.
