    Three Ways Electric Utilities Can Avoid A Death Spiral

    The three ways outlined in the article are through remaking their business model to focus more on emerging technologies and renewable energy, using growth of electric transportation vehicles as a growth lever, and finding opportunities in grid modernization. For example, utilities should become platforms that reward "optimization" rather than consumption. This will enable them to reach more customers through their services. Similarly, the introduction of electric transportation will increase sales of kilowatt-hours by approximately 50%, according to some estimates. Finally, grid modernization will help utilities increase their bouquet of services to customers. "Effective grid modernization should increase the value of electricity service for customers, reducing the likelihood they want to take their demand elsewhere," the article's author writes.
