Adverse Effects of Solar, Wind and Battery Technology

Why is there so much support for solar/wind/battery technology globally despite the obvious adverse effects of its life cycle on soil, water, air, supply of natural resources, human/animal health and ecology?  The answer is simple: 1) cost of technology is decreasing, 2) marginal cost of a KW-h is decreasing, 3) no carbon emissions at the point of delivery.

Someone recently asked me what I thought of renewable energy and I replied metaphorically: "Think of renewable energy like the drug lord Bucho (Joaquim de Almeida) in the movie Desperado with Antonio Banderas and Selma Hayek.  Bucho looked very generous at the wedding of the couple in the movie showering them with cash and smiling warmly.  That is like renewable energy offering carbon free electricity at the point of delivery.

But Bucho's crimes before the wedding that generated the cash and the violence against innocent people after the wedding are like the mining and manufacturing and the end of life disposal of renewable energy technology.

Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition is like Antonio Banderas in the movie keeping the environmental crimes of the renewable energy industry in check. Bucho's compadres in our industry are peddling rosy pictures of renewable energy disguised as science.

Once those “bloody crimes” are done, the result continuously produces benefits. The alternative is bloodier crimes that must be repeated to continuously generate energy AND produce permanent pollution.
