Shell appears to be experimenting with the idea of developing digital power utilities that could also serve as platforms for delivering a range of other services and products.
Shell acquired the U.K's first utility last year and just officially changed its name to Shell Energy, according to a local news report.
The rebranded company's management said all the electricity it delivers to customers will come from renewable energy sources. It also offers natural gas and broadband services, and it just began offering installation of smart thermostats and electric car charging points.
The move is part and parcel of Shell's recently reinvigorated efforts to expand its renewable energy business.
“We want to attract customers with fair pricing, strong customer service and innovative offers that set us apart from anything available today. Later this year, we’ll be announcing a string of exciting services that offer greater convenience to householders and help make homes more efficient.”
