This is an interesting use of bitcoin's lightning network, which takes transactions off the main blockchain to ensure faster processing within its network, to make micropayments for charging an electric car. The link also has a video of the experiment. The utility did not use bitcoin; instead, it used fake bitcoin and the experiment was performed on a closed network. Given that bitcoin's overall number is capped at 21 million, it is not inconceivable that electric utilities may develop their own cryptocurrencies for such applications within their network.
