A group of researchers, policy analysts, and entrepreneurs have come together to list the ways in which artificial intelligence can help mitigate climate change. There are some obvious candidates here - predicting supply and demand of electricity, using smart meters, and accelerating electric vehicle adoption.
Others are not so obvious. For example, machine learning algorithms, which are used in artificial intelligence, can help optimize freight shipping routes and reduce emissions from the industry. Better demand forecasting for products can also help reduce inventory levels in the manufacturing industry and save on emissions from climate-controlled warehouses.
It is important to remember, however, that machine learning and artificial intelligence require processing of enormous amounts of data at scale to improve accuracy. This processing is only possible at data centers, which consume massive amounts of electricity. Thus, even as machine learning and artificial intelligence promise to fight climate change, they are, themselves, important contributors to it.
Nowadays, they are increasingly being located in countries with access to renewable energy sources. Their operations are also being optimized using algorithms to ensure less wastage of electricity.
