Blockchain's applications in the energy sector, though progressing by the day, are often viewed with a hefty dose of skepticism by those less familiar with the technology. And one of the top concerns of naysayers is a valid one: how will we connect the very physical world of the electricity grid and various distributed energy resources (DERs) to the very digital world of blockchain? It's a gap that crypto experts have not had to bridge.
Just last month, an exciting demonstration at 2018's European Utility Week showed us just how it might work. Energy blockchain nonprofit Energy Web Foundation partnered with Wirepas for a proof-of-concept demo in which several small devices were wirelessly connected to the Energy Web Chain — the first and only blockchain made specifically for the energy sector.
