5 Predictions About Recruitment Needs In The Energy Industry In The Future

Companies in the energy industry need to adjust to the new trends that are coming in the future. After years of decline, things have changed - and for the better this time. To support this change, the energy sector has to be ready to respond to challenges quickly and focus on a new approach to hiring and branding. There should an excitement that this market, so quiet in the past few years has finally returned and opened its arms for new people.

Just like every industry at the end of the current year is preparing for new trends coming up, so is the energy industry. Here are some things worth noting:


There is a global and substantial growth in the petrochemicals sector and it shows no sign of slowing down anytime soon. This is happening mostly because of the rise of the middle class in the developing countries and economies. There is a need for food packaging, mod-cons like cars or washing machines with their petrochemical needs and so on.

There is an issue where this masks significant regional disparities. Almost 20% of this industry fired almost a third of their employees in the previous year. The surveys say that there is a disconnect between priorities of hiring managers and the priorities of employees - while hiring managers stress the importance of training, employees tend to focus on salaries and locations. There is also a lack of planning for skills retention and transfer, low hiring rates and high investments in projects.

Oil and gas

“The oil and gas industry continues to ponder on what to do next, what the opportunities are and so on, there are some other things they should consider. For instance, what matters to employees, what would matter to both employees and employers in cooperation and the confidence levels in the theory that the energy industry - notably the oil and gas industry - will only grow,” says an energy industry consultant Mike Bell from 1Day2Write.

Young people don't want to be associated with this industry because it seems less modern and eco-friendly, especially in comparison with new and green technologies. A large number of employees expect the sector to recover in 12 months but it's more likely that it will recover in 18, according to the hiring managers. A good healthcare plan is one of the most sought after features in a job. However, employees and employers disagree on the topic of employment branding and how much the brain matters in the case of hiring talent. They also disagree on when the managers are going to start hiring people again.


The power sector is changing across the globe. There are many challenges that will have to be dealt with in the years to come. Climate change and population growth have placed a lot of pressure on the industry. This problem is enlarged by the need to upgrade old infrastructure in a lot of locations within the industry and the geopolitical issues with supply concerns. There is a need for more graduate and apprenticeship because of the large skills gap in the low level of new employees. There is also a huge gender imbalance. Europe has the lowest chances to pay large salaries - some workers fear they might lower them as well. Hiring managers see Asia, the Middle East and North America as some of the key spots for development.


This industry is growing rapidly across the globe as it has bigger cost competitiveness, better financing and there are less concerns about carbon emissions and energy security. There is a huge number of people employed in this sector and there is a 5% of annual increase. But even though this growth is amazing, there are some questions about where this industry will go from here.

There are some major concerns like skills training, knowledge and skill transfer within the industry, weakness in the anticipated volume of recruitment and employees are more concerned with salary than brand. However, there is a huge interest for this industry, some great corporate cultures that play a role in the industry's attractiveness and so on.


The nuclear industry has suffered a hardest blow out of all the energy industries because of the growing concerns about our environment and the pollution. More and more experts and young people are giving up on nuclear energy and going into more eco friendly industries. Still, there are some expectations of increase in demand for these job position.

“Nuclear industry has the least amount of potential for development out of all the other sectors. Not only are they facing human resources challenges but it also has an aging workforce. However, they still have something to offer - great wages and benefits, for instance,” says an HR manager from WriteMyX and OriginWritings, Susanne Martin.
