Developer seeks to bury transmission lines along railroad corridors
The Direct Connect Development Company wants to move additional wind energy from Iowa, the Dakotas and Minnesota to a transfer point in the Chicago area. Their strategy would include burying transmission lines along railroad corridors. Direct Connect CEO stated, "doing the project underground... limits the impact to the environment, streamlines the permitting process, and limits impacts to neighbors." State regulators and land owner do not agree with the proposed solution. Property owners suggest burying the line using existing easements and regulators have denied the several plans for long-distance, underground transmission lines. However, developers are challenging these decisions.
