National Grid and Con Ed have stopped providing gas to new connections after the New York governor refused to approve new pipelines for both. The fallout has been widespread with homeless shelters to senior citizen centers affected because the utility wants to mobilize support for its new pipeline. The silver lining to this story is that new buildings are now opting for electric heat and appliance systems. But this has driven up their construction costs by 30 percent to 40 percent and it may drive up costs for consumers as well.
