ISEP to Study Energy and Environment in China’s Belt and Road Initiative

The Initiative for Sustainable Energy Policy (ISEP) has received a grant from the ClimateWorks Foundation to study energy and environment in China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

The study will analyze the political drivers of Chinese investments related to energy and environment in BRI countries. It will capture China’s domestic politics around BRI, Beijing’s relationship with host countries, and domestic reactions to BRI projects.

“BRI is China’s flagship initiative, with vast potential to shape global energy and environment,” says Johannes Urpelainen, ISEP Founding Director and leader of the study. “At ISEP we are delighted to offer cutting-edge analytical perspectives to understand and improve sustainability in the BRI.”

The study will be conducted in collaboration with the Blavatnik School at Oxford University, where Professor Thomas Hale, who is also an ISEP fellow, will be the principal investigator.
