The below are some factors which I think will cause the Capacity Factor of US installed wind base to continue to improve and eventually move past 40%.
- Wind turbines continue to evolve and new technlogy means improved efficiency. Many new projects also have taller turbines which further increases wind energy production. The new Texas project mentioned in this article is one example.
- The US is just starting with offshore wind - most of these proejcts will have a 50+% Capacity factor.
- Finally the US is also shutting down some old inefficient wind projects and repowering them with newer turbines which raises the capacity factor for the project.
The capacity factor for all wind in the US for 2018 was 37.4%
Taken all together the above factors could significantly increase the performance of the overall US wind installed base.
I am betting that by 2025 we will see a CF for US that is over 40%.
