A new approach to net-zero-energy, could put new renewable resources to work and form a partnership between utilities and homebuilders. Community solar projects or shared renewable energy plants benefit utilities and consumers. Some 228 utilities now offer community solar options and based on the Brattle study, those numbers will continue to rise. The report concluded that using community solar instead of rooftop solar has economic benefits and allows utilities "better visibility into the capacity and operation of solar PV."
