Project developers proposed building nearly nine times the amount on offer during Portugal's auction of 1,400 megwatts of new solar power capacity, the largest of any energy auction in the country to date. That would more than double Portugal's installed solar power capacity.
Government authorities launched a second phase auction in order to decide the winners of most of the project license awards, which are expected to bring in as much as 1 billion euros (~US$1.13 billion) of investment capital, according to a news report.
Portuguese authories identified 24 solar project locations. All told, developers submitted 64 project development proposals for a total of more than 10,000 MW of rated generation capacity.
Twenty-two tenders will proceed into the second-round tender with those bidders offering the largest discount from Portugal's energy tariff receiving licenses. Winners are to be chosen around Aug. 10.
